Asteroids, Visions of Mystery and Menace

Humankind’s rational fears have historically been confined to his terrestrial concerns: war, famine, pestilence, and, more recently, environmental destruction.  Within the last 10 years, however, the scientific community has become aware that the earth faces a disaster which has the potential to end human life on the planet.  Even a full scale nuclear exchange with the former Soviet Union was never thought to have this potential.  This looming cataclysm could follow the impact of a large asteroid with the earth.  The threat is serious enough to have spawned a world-wide scientific effort (the Spaceguard project) with government funding since 1998, to identify potentially catastrophic earth colliders.  In my Asteroid Series, I have “documented” what these asteroids may look like, seeking to capture the mystery and menace of this alien world.  Following the early asteroid-discovery convention, the images are named for mythological figures.
